For general freight items, rail transport provides an economical and efficient choice, as rail cars can hold up to three times more volume than a tractor/trailer. If you are located directly on the tracks, you can conveniently load cargo directly on to rail cars (called carload). Alternatively, trucks can be hired to transport your cargo to the railroad, load it on the rail cars and pick up the load at your destination for final transport to the location of your choice (called intermodal).
